Dear Parent/Guardian:

MSAD #19/Lubec Consolidated School (LCS) has been notified that the school has achieved the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) 2009-2010 Status of Making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in math and reading. This means that students in grades 3-8 and grade 11 in 2008-2009 met the State of Maine's target for improvement on their MEA and SAT tests. 100% of the students were tested. Students in grades five and six exceeded state averages in both math and reading, and grade seven exceeded the state average in math. For a report card showing subject and class data over the past two years, please visit the state's website
http://www.maine.gov/education/nclb/reportcard/reportcard09.html
and go to MSAD #19. Printed copies of the report card are available in the Superintendent's office, the high school office, the elementary office, and the guidance office for interested members of the public. In addition to student assessment information by grade, the report card compares scores achieved in the spring of 2009, to scores from the spring of 2008.

The School Report Card also shows student achievement by certain federally required categories, such as sex, race, disabilities, and economically disadvantaged. The class sizes at Lubec Consolidated School are often too small to be statistically evaluated in many of these categories. The school staff collects testing data on all students to determine needs for additional student help, and for professional development. In addition to continuing to work on literacy at all grade levels, Title IA teachers are now able to provide some assistance to students who need additional support in math. Teachers will be receiving training on the use of technology in the classroom for all subject areas, a benefit provided through the Maine Learning Technologies Initiative (MLTI).

A general description of the professional qualifications of LCS teachers is included in NCLB Report Card. One of our high school teachers is in the process of attaining federal Highly Qualified (HQ) status in her third subject area. She will complete the requirements in the spring of 2010. Parents of the children taking the classes affected have received letters of notification from the school. All other staff members meet the HQ requirements. Parents may request more detailed information on the professional qualifications of their children's teachers at the Superintendent's Office.

Respectfully,

Brian M. Carpenter
