Summary and Decisions of the Officers of LHS Alumni Association
1.
The longevity of the organization:
Looking towards the future, the officers feel that the organization
in not sustainable due to the dwindling number of alumni members interested in the association. The
overall lack of participation from members and the undue burden of dues and reunion monies to be
collected on alumni members has shown to decrease attendance numbers over the past four reunion
events. The officers were the only persons willing for the past 8 years to even hold office. It is
unreasonable for the officers to continue the organization in its origination. The officers are spread out
over the state and are unable to fulfill the duties due to personal issues with each member.
2.
Working Capital within the Organization:
The current treasury report is Checking: $213.01; Savings:
$603.78; CD: $4,421.72; Totaling: $5,238.51. The inability for a majority of members to continue to
pay dues will dwindle the resources of the organization. The financial costs of the Alumni reunion has
continued to grow rapidly as all aspects of the reunion must now be contracted out. (i.e. food service,
table servers, maintenance and janitorial expenses, paper goods & supplies). The lack of financial
support has become an on going trend, due to lack of support from current members, lack of interest
from new alumni members, and smaller graduating classes.
3.
The 2010 Reunion:
Over the past 4 reunion events there has been an overall lack of participation from
alumni members. In the past there were many volunteers contributing in many areas to the events.
Currently, the 4 officers of the organization have the undue burden of the entire production of the
alumni reunion and maintenance of the organization. The attendees to the celebrations have continued
to decrease over the past 4 reunions. There has been only a handful of attendees from the classes of
1970-present; that’s almost 40 years of possible members who are not interested in the organization.
The enrollment to LHS over the past 10 years has only produced 8- 14 students per year. The financial
burden for alumni members to pay dues and reunion monies may be very difficult for most in this
economy. The costs of holding a reunion has created a financial burden on the alumni members and
the organization. Due to the location of the officers, the ability of the officers to hold such a large event
is not possible. Each officer has personal obligations with business and family and are unable to hold
the event in its capacity. The officers feel very strongly that each class from LHS should hold their own
private reunion, as to continue the tradition but on an individual class basis.
4.
The Scholarship Fund:
The current scholarship fund is still in place and is awarded to 1 senior per year
for $250.
5.
Summary of Decisions by the Officers of the Lubec Alumni Association:
Motion:
To cancel the 2010 Alumni Reunion and recommend alumni classes to hold their own reunions.
Voted: 4 yes 0 No
Motion:
To continue the scholarship fund as voted by members in the minutes until all funds have been
distributed and the account balance is $0.
Voted 4 yes 0 No
Motion:
Officers would remain in office until all funds were distributed to the scholarship fund and then
dissolve the organization in its entire capacity
.
Voted 4 yes 0 No
In summary, the officers have voted to cancel the 2010 reunion for LHS Alumni
Members. The Alumni Association officers will continue their duties and fulfill the
scholarship money obligations until they have depleted and then the Association will be
dissolved in all capacities. It is recommended by the officers that all classes get together
and hold their own private reunions as to stay and touch and keep the spirit of LHS alive.
Thank you for your understanding in this most difficult decision.
Sincerely,
Bion McFadden President Class of 1958
Steven McFadden Vice President Class of 1982
Sandi (McFadden)-Binette Secretary Class of 1991
Debra Olson Treasurer Class of 1971
